Civil Technology focuses on concepts and principles in the building industry and on the relevant technological processes.  It encircles the acquisition of practical skills and the application of scientific principles in the trade of construction. Through the attainment and mastering of this specific set of skills graduates are capacitated to enhance the quality of their lives which ultimately enable them to ensure the sustainable use of our natural environment. 

The subject focuses on three main areas, namely: 

  • Civil Services

  • Construction

  • Woodwork


Learners enrolled in Civil Technology have several careers opportunities e.g:

  • Carpenter and Joiner

  • Bricklayer

  • Tiler

  • Painter

  • Drain layer

  • Roof specialist

  • Cabinet maker

  • Building inspector

  • Draughtsman

  • Building technician

  • Civil technology teacher and quite a few more exciting options.


Learners offering Civil Technology may opt for one of the following opportunities:

  • Apprenticeship to become an artisan

  • Continued studies at a college in a vocational pathway

  • Higher education at a university of technology

  • Higher education at a university – engineering

  • Self-employment as an entrepreneur or employment by an entrepreneur

Specific Aims

The aim of the subject is to develop the skills level of the learners to such extent that they will be able to make a seamless transition into similar TVET or university programs in order to obtain National Senior Certificates, Diplomas or degrees, or be equipped sufficiently for them to be absorbed into learner ships or apprenticeships culminating in completion of their Trade Tests.
